How Time Card Calculations Work

Time card calculations follow these formulas:

Daily Hours = (Time Out - Time In) - Break Time

Regular Hours = Min(Total Hours, Overtime Threshold)

Overtime Hours = Max(0, Total Hours - Overtime Threshold)

Gross Pay = (Regular Hours × Hourly Rate) + (Overtime Hours × Hourly Rate × Overtime Multiplier)

Standard overtime is typically 1.5× regular rate for hours over 40 per week.

Example Calculation

For an employee working 45 hours at $20/hour with 1.5× overtime:

  • Regular hours: 40 hours × $20 = $800
  • Overtime hours: 5 hours × $30 (20 × 1.5) = $150
  • Total gross pay: $800 + $150 = $950
  • Effective hourly rate: $950 ÷ 45 hours = $21.11/hour
