Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA uses a 4.0 scale regardless of course difficulty. Weighted GPA gives extra points for honors, AP, or IB courses, typically using a 5.0 scale.
How do plus and minus grades affect GPA?
Plus grades typically add 0.3 points (B+ = 3.3), while minus grades subtract 0.3 points (B- = 2.7). However, A+ is usually still 4.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Do all courses count equally toward GPA?
No, courses are weighted by credit hours. A 4-credit course has more impact on your GPA than a 1-credit course. This is why the calculation uses quality points.
What GPA do I need for college admission?
Requirements vary by institution. Community colleges may accept 2.0+, state universities often require 3.0+, and competitive schools may expect 3.5+ or higher.
