Understanding Grades

Weighted vs. Unweighted Grades

Example Calculations

Example 1: Current Grade Calculation

Exams (40%): 85% → 85 × 0.40 = 34.0 points
Homework (30%): 92% → 92 × 0.30 = 27.6 points
Projects (20%): 88% → 88 × 0.20 = 17.6 points
Participation (10%): 95% → 95 × 0.10 = 9.5 points
Current Grade = 34.0 + 27.6 + 17.6 + 9.5 = 88.7% (B+)

Example 2: Grade Needed Calculation

Current: Exams (60%, 82%), Homework (25%, 90%)
Remaining: Final Exam (15%, need to find)
Target: 85% overall grade
85 = (82 × 0.60) + (90 × 0.25) + (X × 0.15)
85 = 49.2 + 22.5 + 0.15X
X = (85 - 71.7) / 0.15 = 88.7% needed on final exam

Frequently Asked Questions

How do weighted grades work?

Weighted grades multiply each category score by its weight percentage. The sum of all weighted scores gives your final grade. All weights should add up to 100%.

What if my weights don't add up to 100%?

The calculator will still work, but results may not be accurate. Make sure all category weights total exactly 100% for the most precise calculations.
